A common problem that plaques many women after menopause is the loss of bone density leading to osteoporosis. By doing resistance training prior to menopause there is evidence that women can increase their bone density. The greater the bone mass prior to menopause, the less severe are the consequences of loss of bone mass after menopause. So for younger women resistance training may lead to a decreased risk of osteoporosis, fractures, and falls in later life.
If you already have osteoporosis, weight training can help prevent further bone loss and evidence suggests that bone density can actually be gained back at a slow rate. In addition, the muscle strength gained by weight training will increase balance and coordination and decrease the likelihood of a dangerous fall. There are some exercises that should be avoided in the presence of osteoporosis so be sure to meet with your personal trainer when setting up your initial routine. Build that bone! -Joe
